Purpose of exhibition to show the results of the observation that a different environment and culture has upon a young student artist.

Luke Johnson (1985) and Katlyn Morocco (1988) are from the U.S. state of Pennsylvania attending classes at Wastmoreland Co. Community College. For the past month they have been in a workshop at the studio of american artist David Lester Learn in Mozzate (Como) with additional trips to Milano and Switzerland.

After such excursions they returned to the studio and proceeded to work on ideas and composition brought about by the observation, notes and sketches done while travelling around. On addition they visited museums, galleries and art fairs to view the works of professional artists looking at a variety of materials and styles used.

This Exhibition is the result of their experiences. Although it's only a small selection of the work done it hopefully gives the view of the process that took place.

David Lester Learn

This small exhibition has come to us at the end of the time these two American students have spent visiting every corner of Lombardy.
The first reference one can make is to the Grand Tour in true 1800s' style, since the fruit of their toils has been to note down the observations that developed while in contact with a foreign environment, which always has something new to offer.
The second comment, on the other hand, is provoked by the title the two artists chose for their exhibition: "At odds". With its dual meaning of conflict and vague collection of "bits and bobs", it almost seems to point out to an awareness of notes taken while on the move.
There is undoubtedly a contrast between the works of Katlyn Morocco and Luke Johnson, when it comes to the significantly different styles used by the two young artists: Katlyn uses acrylic and ink to create more vigorous and immediate compositions which do not disdain from making some direct figurative references, occasionally introducing a geometric, pop or even Liberty element. Here I'm thinking about Umbrellas in its subjective and decorative ambivalence, or about Purgatory Series where the easily recognisable theme of the flame unites with the insertion of linear frames, which underline the scene, perhaps with the desire to recall the architecture of the Duomo in Como, which is the effective springboard for the departure point of the series.
Luke's works, on the other hand, restore a sense of greater calm and reflection, due certainly to the use of oil colours which are so slow to apply and dry, and lead us back to observing nature with its infinite number of colour tones. Thanks to the extreme fluidity of the images, in fact, you can perceive how attentive and scrupulous he was in examining the nuances in the sky, and vegetation; this has led, however, to a transfiguration into abstract pictures that no longer have any relations with the real.
My wish for them is that these beginnings are just the starting point on a wonderful journey.

Scopo dell'esposizione è mostrare i risultati dell’osservazione che ambiente e cultura hanno su un giovane studente d’arte.

Luke Johnson (1985) e Katlyn Morocco (1988) vengono dallo stato americano della Pennsylvania e frequentano il corso universitario al Wastmoreland Community college.

Per tutto il mese di giugno hanno frequentato un workshop a Mozzate (Como) presso lo studio dell’artista americano David Lester Learn con visite a Milano e in Svizzera. Dopo queste esperienze sono tornati nello studio per elaborare idee e composizioni prodotte dall’osservare, dal prendere appunti e schizzi durante i viaggi.

In più hanno visitato gallerie, musei e fiere d’arte per vedere i lavori d'artisti affermati, confrontando la varietà di materiali e stili usati.

Questa mostra è il risultato delle loro esperienze. Tuttavia solo una parte del lavoro svolto sarà esposta con la speranza di far capire allo spettatore il contenuto del processo svolto.


David Lester Learn

Questa piccola mostra giunge al termine del soggiorno di due studenti americani su e giù per la Lombardia.
Il primo riferimento possibile è quello del Grand Tour d'ottocentesca tradizione, dal momento che il frutto delle loro fatiche è proprio l'annotazione delle osservazioni sviluppate a contatto con un ambiente straniero e sempre nuovo.
Il secondo riferimento è, invece, suggerito dal titolo scelto dagli artisti stessi: "At odds" nel suo duplice significato di contrasto e di insieme indistinto di "cianfrusaglie", quasi ad indicare la consapevolezza di appunti presi di passaggio.
Il contrasto si pone indubbiamente tra le opere di Karhlyn e Luke per quanto riguarda lo stile così diverso nei due giovani autori: Katlyn si serve dell'acrilico e dell'inchiostro per creare composizioni più vigorose ed immediate, che non disdegnano il richiamo figurale diretto e introducono, di volta in volta, l'elemento geometrico, pop o addirittura liberty, penso ad Umbrellas, nella sua ambivalenza oggettuale e decorativistica, oppure alla Purgatory series in cui il tema ben riconoscibile della fiamma si unisce all'inserzione di cornici lineari, che sottolineano la scena, forse a voler richiamare anche l'architettura del Duomo di Como, che è lo spunto concreto dal quale scaturisce la serie.
Le opere di Luke restituiscono, invece, un senso di maggiore calma e riflessione, dovuto certamente all'uso del colore a olio, così lento da stendere e ad asciugare, e ci riportano all'osservazione della natura, nelle sue infinite sfumature. Grazie alla estrema fluidità delle immagini, infatti, si coglie un esame attento e scrupoloso delle nuances del cielo, piuttosto che della vegetazione, trasfigurato però in quadri astratti, ormai slegati dalla relazione con il reale. Auguro loro che questi spunti siano l'inizio di un viaggio bellissimo.
